Hear from Crosby Roberts ‘29 on why she chose to apply to FUSAB.

Hey there!! My name is Crosby Roberts, and I am a sophomore at Furman studying Politics & International Affairs. I am also a member of FUSAB’s Off-Campus Events Committee and serve on the Executive Council as the board’s Parliamentarian. Today, I get to talk about why I chose to apply to FUSAB in the first place and the impact it has had on me. As I reflect upon my freshman year, I owe it to FUSAB for so many special memories and friends that have enhanced my experience as a Furman student.

As soon as I stepped on campus in August, I was eager to find ways I could make a significant impact on the campus community. The fact that I was a Freshman, though, intimidated me, as I always assumed leadership and impact could only be initiated by older students. After going to a few fun events put on by FUSAB, such as Dins After Dark, the Fall Ball, and the Jarty, I built up the courage to apply to the board! At these events, I saw and felt a collaborative, energetic spirit shared amongst the board members leading the events. I noticed how even at event cleanup, board members still made the most of it by staying joyful, chatting, and singing. I hoped that submitting my board member application would allow me to join a team of excited students willing to work as hard as they can to provide unique and fun opportunities to so many students.

I am so appreciative of how the board has developed my personal leadership skills, as well as those of many others. My favorite part of FUSAB is how so many members are able to identify the unique skills of individual members and showcase to the rest of the board (and all of Furman!) how important they are to crafting fun events and creating a community. In FUSAB, though there are many traditional leadership roles, everyone is valued and appreciated for their contributions to the board, making the hard work we do all the more worthwhile. Even in the most stressful moments, the many incredible members of the board always know how to make you feel welcomed and recognized for what you have to bring to the table.

I have loved sharing my experience applying for FUSAB as well as my favorite parts of being on the board. Though I was hesitant at first, sending in an application was just the first step to enhancing my Furman experience, as well as enhancing the experiences of so many others through the events we put on. I hope that you will consider submitting a board member application and share your strengths and skills with our board!
